Roofing Options That Can be Identified When Maintaining or Installing Gutters

If it is your regular time for gutter maintenance or you are thinking of replacing them, this is also the perfect time to review your entire roofing system. After all, once you have an expert up there, why not use their skills to the fullest?

At Legacy Gutters, all of the members of our team are well versed in many aspects of roofing. While working on your gutters, we will take a look at your roof and advise you on any issues. We can also provide you with options on how to improve its overall condition and durability.

Here are a few of the common problems you may have that we can easily solve. This will ensure that your roof and gutters and as a result you home, remain in the best possible condition.

Overhanging Shingles

If your shingles were installed to extend too far over the eave, they may be covering or blocking a significant part of your gutters. This can reduce their effectiveness and may result in water overshooting the entire system during a storm, causing it to run directly down the side of your home. In some cases, overhanging shingles can even play a part in blocking your gutters. This will cause the shingle to get worn down more quickly and can create significant damage to your home.

Badly Placed Gutters

When doing maintenance for the first time, we will review whether your gutters are placed at the correct distance from your roof. Oftentimes, gutters are installed directly under the roof shingles. However, if they are placed too high, it can result in your gutters being pulled away from the house by ice and snow during a strong winter. Conversely, if your gutters have been installed too far down, water coming off the roof during a heavy storm could miss them altogether.

No Kick-Out Flashing

While flashing is a mandatory part of the majority of roofs today, the part that can get omitted is kick-out flashing. This is the element of your gutter system that prevents water from running down the side of your home. Over time this can cause damage to your walls and create visible spots of rot in areas where the roof meets the sidewall.

Deteriorating Shingles

Finding a small amount of granules in your gutter during maintenance is perfectly normal. However, if the rain is pulling down a significant amount of granules into the gutter, it is usually a strong indicator that your shingles are losing their protective coating and may need to be replaced.
