When to Clean, Repair, or Replace Your Gutters

5/4/2022

If you're like most homeowners, you probably only think about your gutters when they start to overflow. But regular cleaning and maintenance are key to keeping your gutters in good shape to avoid repairs or replacements down the road. Now that spring is here, it’s time to start spring cleaning and take care of all your home maintenance tasks. The fall and winter may have taken a toll on your gutters and since spring and summer are likely to have rainstorms, it’s the perfect time to start cleaning, repairing, or replacing your gutter system to ensure it works properly. Here is how to determine when it’s time to perform these tasks on your gutters.

When To Do Gutter Cleaning?

The answer to this question can somewhat depend on how many trees are around your property but most experts agree that gutter cleaning should be done at least once or twice a year, typically in the fall and spring. One of the reasons to perform cleaning during these seasons is to avoid maintenance work in harsher weather and secondly, in the fall after all the leaves have fallen you will be able to clear out most of them along with other debris that tends to accumulate in your gutters. It’s a good idea to keep an eye on your gutters in the interim to ensure they don’t overflow. Also, try to trim back trees away from your home to help some.

When To Repair Gutters?

There isn’t necessarily a time of year to repair gutters, but there are a few signs to look for when determining if your gutters are repairable rather than be replaced. Experts recommend that gutter repairs can be done possibly if there are only a few cracks or holes in the system, if only one joint or seam is leaking, or if there’s only minor damage to one or two sections. In addition, whether it makes sense financially may also be a factor. For example, if you have copper gutters with minor damage, they may be worth repairing, instead of replacing, due to their higher costs.

When To Do Gutter Replacement?

Some experts suggest that replacing a gutter system in the summer is the best time of year, as it provides better weather and fewer delays, but you certainly should prioritize gutter replacement any other time of year if the following occur: several small repairs are needed throughout the system, noticeable sagging, sections fail to stay together, or any visible water damage. It’s a good idea to schedule professional service if your home’s gutters have not been replaced in the last fifteen years. Different types of gutter systems can last twenty to fifty years but having a professional inspection can allow you to detect small problems before they get out of hand.

What are Gutters and Why are They Important?

4/4/2022

Most homeowners neglect their gutters when it comes to routine maintenance. The rain gutter is, as their name suggests, simple in design and operation; it carries rainwater from the roof to the ground. The gutter does, however, help protect your home from serious water damage. If you are asking yourself, What are Gutters and Why are They Important, you might be surprised to learn that your rain gutters contribute to the structural integrity of your home in more ways than you imagine.

What are Gutters

Essentially, gutters collect rainwater from your roof, channeling it through a downspout to the ground. When it rains, water rolls down from the slope of the roof to the gutters. Water accumulates in the gutter and travels to the downspout through the gutter system. Downspouts convey rainwater from gutters to the base of the house. The water is typically diverted to prevent flooding of the basement and the foundation.

Why are Gutters Important

Having rain gutters is extremely important since they keep your home safe from rain and water damage. If you do not have a gutter system, rainwater will likely collect in your roof, causing rot, deterioration, and mold. As a result, your roof shingles, soffit, and fascia will be weakened. Water naturally flows down from your roof to your siding, windows, and foundation due to gravity. The presence of moisture in windows results in condensation, which damages the sill and interior walls. Mold and grime may also develop as a result. When water pools against the foundation of your home, it causes erosion, weakens the integrity and structure, and can result in flooding. Gutters are designed to prevent all these adverse effects. Nevertheless, gutters can deteriorate if not maintained properly. A buildup of leaves and other debris can prevent gutters from working properly. If debris accumulates, water may overflow and cause damage to the siding of the home. Heavy rains and high winds may also cause the gutter system to become misaligned. As a result, gutters may become weak and could even break.
